17.1.3 Mechanical Ventilation Methods
• General Ventilation
The method of exhausting polluted air by changing the air of a room using an installed ventilator is called general ventilation. This type
of air is suited for cases where the pollutant source such as smoke, steam, or odor has dispersed inside the room.
17.1.4 Essentials for Air Supply
In the case of ventilation, the most important point is ensuring a sufficient supply air opening. In order to always perform stable
ventilation, fresh outdoor air must be supplied to the same extent as exhaust air.
 Relationship of Size and Location of the Air Supply Opening
(1) Size of the Air Opening
Ventilators have the exhaust capacity expressed in their catalogs but the exhaust air that the ventilator sends outside is limited by the
supply air coming inside. Consequently, when the air opening is small the manner of air coming inside is small, and ventilation
capacity is reduced. Generally, the installation area for the ventilator is made larger.
The installation area is made large enough for the incoming air velocity to be small and prevent any discomfort to the people near the
air opening.

openings
When a room is large, ventilation
is made uniform by dispersing air
openings and installing them as
far as possible from the
ventilators.
(2) Position of Exhaust (Ventilator) and Air Supply Opening
For general ventilation, the supply air openings are installed in locations that are as far as possible from the ventilators. In cases of
local ventilation for this, the supply air openings are installed as close to the ventilator as possible to narrow what is being targeted for
ventilation.
