12. Glossary
Resonance
A parameter that boosts the level of the signal in the
area of the cutoff frequency. By emphasizing the over-
tones in this area, this can produce a distinctive "peaky"
tone, making the sound brighter and harder.
Reverb
An effect that simulates the acoustical reverberation of
a room or space. The sound that reaches our ear usu-
ally includes not only the direct sound, but also sound
that was reflected off the walls or ceiling. Reverb cre-
ates these indirect reflections artificially. Although some
reflections can be perceived individually as distinct ech-
oes, the term "reverb" usually refers only to the indistinct
"wash" of reflected sound.
Reverse
Applies to the trick of playing a sample or a portion of a
sample in reverse.
ROM
Read Only Memory. This type of memory can be read
from but not written to or erased. All preset memory is
ROM memory.
RPN
An acronym for Registered Parameter Number. These
MIDI messages are used to adjust individual part set-
tings such as Pitch Bend Sensitivity or Tuning.
Sample
A recorded sound or phrase produced by a sampling
operation.
Sample Data
Data including the sampled waveform and the data that
specifies the start point, end point, and other playback
parameters.
Sample Kit Voice
A sample kit voices is a single voice in which different
samples are assigned to each key from C-2 through G8.
Sample kit voices allow different samples to be played
individually or simultaneously via different keys on the
keyboard.

Sample Voice
A voice based on a sample created by using the sam-
pling function.
Sampling Frequency
Specifies the number of "samples" taken of an analog
signal each second. The individual samples are con-
verted to digital values which represent the amplitude of
the signal and the sample point. The higher the sam-
pling frequency the higher the resultant sound quality.
Sampling Level
The signal level (the "record" level) set when sampling.
Save
The process of saving data or songs from internal mem-
ory to floppy disk.
Scene Memory
The RS7000 has 5 scene memories which can store
complete "snapshots" of all current settings for instant
recall when needed.
SCSI
Stands for "Small Computer Serial Interface". The SCSI
interface is used to connect hard disks and other stor-
age media to the RS7000.
Section
A term referring to each of the 16 types of patterns that
comprise a style. Patterns are selected by specifying
the style and the section.
Send Level
The amount of signal that is sent to a specified bus line
for processing by an effect. The amount of signal that is
returned from the effect is the "return level".
Sensitivity
The degree to which an aspect of the sound (e.g., vol-
ume) responds to control (e.g., note velocity).
Sequencer
A system (or device) that records, edits, modifies, and
plays back a musical performance in the form of MIDI
messages.
Sequence Tracks
Tracks which record and playback normal MIDI
sequence data.
