7. TROUBLESHOOTING

PROBLEM
LIKELY CAUSE
a) Hard starting
– No fuel
– Stale fuel or build-ups in tank
– Incorrect starting procedure
– Spark plug disconnected
– The spark plug is wet or the spark
plug electrodes are dirty or placed
inadequately
– Air filter clogged
– Incorrect oil for the season
– Fuel evaporation in the carburettor
(vapor lock) due to high temperatures
– Fault in carburation
– Hard starting
b) Inconsistent
– Dirty electrodes or incorrect gap
working
– The spark plug cap is inserted
incorrectly
– Air filter clogged
– Throttle trigger in "CHOKE" position
– Fault in carburation
– Fault in ignition
c) Loss of power
– Air filter clogged
whilst operating
– Fault in carburation
– Governor out of phase with respect to
the accelerator
