& WARNING
D ow nshifting on Slippery Surfaces:
D ow nshifting into low er g e a r while
driving on slippery surfaces is
dangerous. The sudden change in tire
speed could cause the tires to skid.
T his could lea d to loss o f vehicle
control a n d an accident. I f it is
necessary to dow nshift on slippery
surfaces, be very careful.
W hen driving on ice or in water, snow,
m ud, sand, or sim ilar hazard:
• Be cautious and allow extra distance
for braking.
• Avoid sudden braking and quick
steering.
• If y our vehicle is not equipped w ith
A BS, brake w ith the pedal by using a
light up-dow n m otion. D o n 't hold the
pedal dow n constantly.
I f y our vehicle is equipped w ith ABS,
d o n 't pum p the brakes. C ontinue to
press dow n on the brake pedal.
• If y ou get stuck, shift to 1 (L) or 2 (S)
and accelerate slowly. D o n 't spin the
front w heels.
• For m ore traction in starting, use sand,
rock salt, chains, carpeting, or other
nonslip m aterial under the front
w heels.

Rocking the Vehicle

£ s WARNING
Spinning the Wheels:
W hen the vehicle is stuck, spinning
the w heels a t high speed is dangerous.
The spinning tire could overheat a n d
explode. This could cause serious
injuries. D o n 't spin the w heels a t
m ore than 5 6 km /h (35 m p h ), and
d o n 't allow anyone to stand b ehind a
w heel when p u sh in g the vehicle.

CAUTION
Too m uch rocking m ay cause engine
overheating, transaxle failure, and tire
dam age.
I f you m ust rock the vehicle to free it from
snow, sand, or m ud, depress the
accelerator slightly and slowly m ove the
shift lever back and forth from 1 (D) to R.
