Engine Coolant

Inspecting Coolant Level
A WARNING
H o t Engine:
A h o t engine is dangerous. I f the
engine has been running, pa rts o f the
engine com partm ent can becom e very
hot. You cou ld be burned. D o n 't
inspect the coolan t system o r a d d
coolan t w hen the engine is hot.
Inspect the antifreeze protection and
coolant level in the coolant reservoir at
least once a year— at the beginning o f the
w inter season— and before traveling
w here tem peratures m ay drop below
freezing.
Inspect the condition and connections of
all cooling system and heater hoses.
R eplace any that are sw ollen or
deteriorated.
T he coolant should be at full in the
radiator and betw een the F and L m arks
on the coolant reservoir w hen the engine
is cool.

M aintenance and Care
Owner Maintenance
If it's at or near L, add enough coolant to
the coolant reservoir to provide freezing
and corrosion protection and to bring the
level to F.

CAUTION
R adiator coolant w ill dam age paint.
R inse it off quickly.
D o n o t overfill.
If new coolant is required frequently,
consult an A uthorized M azda Dealer.
▼ Changing Coolant
C hange coolant according to Scheduled
M aintenance (page 8-3).
& CAUTION
U se only soft (dem ineralized) w ater
in the coolant m ixture. W ater that
contains m inerals will cut dow n on
the co o lan t's effectiveness.
D o n 't add only water. A lw ays add a
proper coolant m ixture.
T he engine has alum inum parts and
m ust be protected by an ethylene-
glycol-based coolant to prevent
corrosion and freezing.
DO NO T U SE alcohol or m ethanol
antifreeze. DO NO T M IX alcohol
or m ethanol w ith the coolant. This
could dam age the cooling system.
D o n 't use a solution that contains
m ore than 60 % antifreeze.
T his w ould reduce effectiveness.
