8. Flush colon decompression tube and guiding catheter with sterile water or
lubricate with water-soluble lubricant, then reassemble and advance into
colon over pre-positioned wire guide under periodic fluoroscopic monitoring.
Caution: Failure to monitor the position of the wire guide fluoroscopically
may result in dislodgement of the wire guide.
9. Once colon decompression tube is advanced to target area, under periodic
fluoroscopic monitoring withdraw both guiding catheter and wire guide,
making certain the colon decompression tube remains stationary within colon.
Caution: Failure to monitor the colon decompression tube fluoroscopically
may result in dislodgement of the colon decompression tube.
10. Secure external portion of colon decompression tube to patient. Attach
drainage connector to appropriate drainage collection bag to begin drainage,
per institutional guidelines.
Removal
11. Carefully remove the colon decompression tube by gently pulling it through
the colon until it exits.
Upon completion of procedure, dispose of device(s) per institutional
guidelines for biohazardous medical waste.
