Anal incontinence
Anal incontinence also referred to as faecal incontinence is the impair-
FR
ment of the ability to control the outflow of gas or stool. There are many

the anal sphincter (circular muscle), for example, caused during birth,

by surgery or by damage to the nerves which controls the anal muscles.
The condition usually worsens with age.

How does an incontinence treatment functions?
The electrical stimulation over the pelvic nerve is an acceptable alter-
NL
native for the treatment of urinary incontinence. It is also recommended
as a treatment method for anal incontinence which is caused by pelvic
RU
floor dysfunction or a malfunctioning of anal muscles. In the treatment
of stress incontinence, the aim of the electrical stimulation is to reflect
a voluntary muscle contraction, and thus to improve the function of pel-
PL
vic floor muscles. For urge incontinence, the aim is to inhibit involunta-
ry contractions of the bladder by stimulation of the nerves in the pelvic
floor. In the treatment of mixed incontinence, stimulation is suitable to
SE
be used for both urge incontinence and stress incontinence. For anal in-
continence the aim is to improve the bowel control by strengthening and
toning pelvic floor muscles.
