Hot-replace is only possible while the server is online if the memory
boards have a redundant configuration in the BIOS setup, in other
words, if they are in either Memory-Mirroring or Memory-RAID mode.
– Hot-add: Add new memory boards in free slots (see

If neither Memory-Mirroring nor Memory-RAID is configured in the
BIOS setup, hot-add is only possible while the server is online if
"Maximum Compatibility" is configured in the BIOS setup.

In addition, the operating system must support hot-replace and hot-add.
If these prerequisites are not fulfilled, hot-plug operations are not
possible. In this case, the system must be shut down to perform the
relevant operations.
Only memory boards of the same type and with the same configurations
can be replaced or added. If the boards do not match, the new board will
not work.
The various memory modules (DIMMs) that can be added to or removed
from the memory boards are described in the Options Guide.
