Hot plug components

This chapter describes how to handle hot-plug components and how to modify
your server hardware.
The hot-plugging procedure (replacing and adding components while the
system is running) increases system availability and ensures a high degree of
data integrity and system stability.
First, we describe the hot-plug components with which direct external access is
possible, in other words, power supply units, fans, and HDD modules. We then
discuss the hot-plug components that can only be accessed after the housing
cover is removed, in other words, memory boards and PCI boards.
V
CAUTION!
It is essential that you observe the safety instructions in chapter
"Important information" on page
V
CAUTION!
Faulty hot-plug components should always be replaced as soon as
possible. This applies in particular to system fans and power supply
units.
I
Upgrades, updates and replacement of permanently installed compo-
nents are described in the "Options Guide" or in the service supplement
and may only be performed by trained specialized personnel.
8.1

Replacing hot-plug power supply units

The server has two hot-plug power supply units. This ensures a redundant
power supply. If one power supply unit fails, the other unit ensures that operation
can continue as normal. The defective power supply unit can be replaced
online.
V
CAUTION!
When replacing a non-defective ho- plug power supply unit in a non-
redundant configuration (only one power supply unit), the server must
be switched off first.
