The diagnostics string of a slave according to profile S-7.4 is read with this
function. As the string can be longer than the mailbox, it is stored in a buffer,
the contents of which can be read in sections from index i.
The first byte in the buffer defines the length of the string that has been read.
When i = 0, the string is read from the slave, otherwise the function responds
from the store, as a result of which the data can be read consistently.
