MAINTENANCE
Essentially, y ourprinterisarobustpieceof equipmen~ butshouldbetreated
with a modicumof care in orderto avoidmalfunctions. F or example:
Keepyourprinterin a "comfortable" environment. R oughlyspeaking,if
youamcomfortable, t hentheenvironment i s suitableforyourprinter(see
Chapter2).
Do not subjectthe printerto physicalshocksor excessivevibration.
Avoid over-dusty environments.Dust is the enemy of all precision
mechanicaldevices.
Tocleantheexterioroftheprinter,useaclothbarelydarnpened witheither
waterwith a littledetergentor a littlealcohol,but do not allowanyliquid
to fall insidethe printer.
Theinteriorof theprintermaybe cleanedwith a smallvacuumcleaneror
a compressed-airaerosol(sold for this purpose).When performingthis
operation, be sure not to bend or damageany cable comections or
electroniccomponents.
REPLACING THE PRINT HEAD
Thisisnotajob whichyouwillneedtodoveryoften.Theprintheadhasbeen
designedto lastfor about200milliondots.In normaleverydayuse,thiswill
translateto yearsof life.However,if theprintqualityis faint,evenafteryou
havechangedtheribbonor youhaveadjustedthegapbetweentheprinthead
and the platen(see Chapter4), the printhead may need replacement
Onlyuse a replacementprinthead as recommendedby yoursupplier.

Turn OFF the printer,andunplugthe powercord.
Openthe frontcover,and removethe ribboncartridge.
Iftheprinterhas beenin operationimmediately befo~ thisoperation, t he
print head will be hot. Allow time for the print head to cool before
attemptingto workon it.
Unscrewthe two screwsthat hold the printhead in place and set them
aside.
Disengagethe connector,then removethe printhead.
Placethe new printhead on its suppofl,seatingit on the two pins.
