To clean the sponge, knead it in warm water with a mild detergent. Rinse well and ensure that the sponge
is squeezed dry before re-inserting it in the oiler.
The sponge should remain relatively the same size, but if it is shredded, replace it. Shredding can
occur if the sponge is pinched under the bearing or scraper during assembly.
Use caution during assembly not to pinch the sponge when closing the oiler on the tubing.
The scraper (part number 27) has a spring that applies continuous circumferential force. This part
becomes unserviceable when the spring can no longer close the scraper onto the tubing.

Lube Tank Kit

The second portion of the Argus TubeSpec lubrication system is the lube tank kit. The kit supplies
heavy oil to the oiler assemblies by pumping the lubricant with a small pneumatic pump that is con-
trolled by a pressure regulator. The pump requires between 40 and 110 PSI at 5CFM to operate.
A control valve on the pump dictates which side of the measuring head's oilers gets oil, and stops all
oil flow when the tubing is not moving. This valve, which is controlled by the Argus control box,
includes indicators to let users know (via the software – see Lube Tank Status/Warning) when the tank
is low on lubricant or when the lubricant is not flowing properly.
Oil use varies with operational conditions. NOV CTES recommends the use of heavy oil for the lube
tank because the measuring head's packers strip off most of the oil. The heavy oil better adheres to the
tubing and helps reduce packer friction. Light oils are scraped off, so they do not reduce friction as
well as heavy oils. Recommended heavy oil: Omala 460 – a Shell product (http://www.shell.com/
home/content/lubes/products/types_oils_lubricants/gear_oils/), or Moropa 460 – a Texaco Product
(http://www.chevronlubricants.com/welcome.aspx).
For low-temperature opertation, NOV CTES suggests the use of Tegra Synthetic Gear Lubricant – a
Texaco product – SAE 75W-90 (or its equivalent).
Diesel is never recommended; it actually increases friction by softening the packer.
For environmentally safe lubricant Envirologic 220 gear oil (http://www.terresolve.com/). NOV is a
distributer of Terresolve products.
