STEERING REDUCTION BOX

Disassemble

1: Remove the steering wheel.
2: Remove the universal joint covers.
3: Pull the bellows off of the steering shaft.
4: Remove the universal joint pinch bolt.
5: Remove the locking handle and pivot bolts.
6: Pull the upper column assembly up and off of the reduction box.
7: If required, remove the universal joint set screws and universal joint off of the shaft. The shaft can now be
pulled out of the column assembly.
Note: If replacing the bushings, the new bushings may need to be reamed to 1 inch after installation.
8: Remove the 6 reduction box assembly bolts, adjuster lock bolts and adjuster bolt and pull the upper plate off
of the reduction box assembly.
9: Remove the 2 side covers.
10: Remove the 2 adjustor lock brackets.
11: Remove the upper adjustor bearing bracket assembly.
12: Remove the adjuster screw bracket.
13: Remove the input shaft and upper chain.
14: Remove the counter shaft sprocket and lower chain and lower adjustor bearing bracket assembly.
15: Loosen the main sprocket pinch bolts and pull the sprocket off of the fork spindle using a gear puller.

Pre-Assemble

1: Press bronze bushings into the steering column.
Note: Bushings may have to be reamed at 1 inch to fit the steering shaft.
2: Install a bearing into the upper housing plate.
3: Install the collar and flat washer onto the steering shaft and insert
the steering shaft all the way down into the column. DO NOT tighten
the collar set screw at this time. Install the universal joint on to the
steering shaft and tighten both set screws and jam nuts.
4: Install 4 U-nuts onto the column housing.
5: Install U-nuts into the adjuster and adjuster lock brackets.
6: Assemble the two chains with master links.
7: Install 2 clips onto the counter shaft sprocket.
8: Install 2 clips on input shaft.
9: Assemble 2 each of adjuster bracket/bearing assemblies.

Assemble

1: Install the spacer on the top of the frame mounting plate and then the lower
gear box housing plate.
2: Install the woodruff key
3: Install the main sprocket onto the fork spindle about ½ inch. DO NOT press
all the way down.
4: Place 1 adjustor bracket/bearing assembly on top of the lower housing
plate.
5: Install the counter shaft sprocket into the bearing (small gear on bottom).
Make sure the retaining ring on the shaft is seated against the bearing.
6: Slowly press the main sprocket down until the sprockets line up and tighten
the lock collar pinch bolts incrementally to torque listed in the Hardware
Torque table at the end of this section.
7: Install a bearing into the main sprocket housing.
8: Remove the counter shaft sprocket. Install a chain around the smaller
counter shaft sprocket and then around the main sprocket while lowering
into the bearing in the adjustor bracket.
9: Install a chain
around the input shaft sprocket and then around the counter
