1.2: Installation

The D-40 printer is meant to be used in an office type environment, on top of a table or desk. If
the environment is comfortable for the operator the D-40 Series printer will work just fine. See
"Operating Environment" above. Adequate working space must be provided around unit,
especially for proper ventilation of internal components. The exhaust fan at rear of unit must
never be blocked. Should repairs be needed and to perform normal operating functions –
changing foil, loading cards, etc., a minimum of 10 inches, all around the unit, is recommended.
The D-40 Series printer will be installed by an NBS or Authorized Dealer trained technician.
The technician will also train the operator in the basic function of the system. The end user
will be asked to sign off on the final installation when completed to end user satisfaction.

1.3: Familiarization with Unit

The following identifies the major components of interest to operators.
Figure 1-1 shows the front of the unit, while Figure 1-2 shows the rear of the unit. Except for
turning unit on, the operator mainly interfaces with the front of the unit via the keyboard, the
LCD panel, the switch panel. Other functions, such as loading and unloading cards, changing
printer foil and cleaning tape are also accomplished from the front of the unit, some requiring
the top front cover to be opened.
