If you try to enter a V.D.L. com pensation number while an Air Sensor is co nnected to the
Measurement Display unit, th e value you enter will be ignored, and the va lue derived from the
Air Sensor 's inputs will be used.
When an Air Sensor error occurs, the appropriate message immediately appears on the di splay
(unless there is a higher priority error) and the next press of the V.D.L. key witl yield "C Error"
indi catin g that an error condition exists with one of the air se nsor measuremen ts. Su ccess ive
presses will display the valid air sensor data, and pass over the invalid senso r data.
NOTE
Connectin g or disconnecting th e Air Se nso r during a measure-
ment may result in a measurement error.
More About the RESOL key
This key allows you to select or display the number of significa nt decimal pla ces displayed on the
Measurement Di splay unit during a measurement. This key also set s the "s moothing" function
"o n" or "off".
You can use the RESDl key at any time, without loss of measurement data .
To Display the Resolutio n Val ue
To di splay the curre nt resoluti on value, just press the RESD l key. Pressing the key again sends the
laser Measurement System ba ck to the cu rrent measurement mode.
Resolution limits are different for each measurement mode, and, except as noted below, English
unit resolution is one place greater than the metri c equivalent. You ca n see thi s by viewing the
current resolution and switc hing the ENGLISH / METRIC sw itch o n the Measurement Di splay
unit's rear panel from one positio n to the other. Except as noted bel ow, changing the
ENGLI SH/ METRIC switch setti ng does not change the smoo thing fun ction .

SMOOTHING
Measurement d ata ca n be averaged by the Measurement Di spla y unit to redu ce the am ount of
number-cha nging you see in the display . This is called "s mooth ing".
To turn smoothing " o n", enter the resolution number you wan t, as a positive nurnber (i.e., just
enter the number ).
To turn smoothing "off", enter the reso luti on number you want as
a
nega tive number
(i .e.,
precceded by the "_" key in th e ENTRY key group ).
