3.6 Using the Console Interface

You can access the switch console interface using either:
The Console EIA-232 port (locally or remotely via modems and a telephone
network).
Via Telnet - from a PC running a Telnet application connected to a LAN.
Telnet requires that an IP address and subnet mask have already been
configured on the switch - see IP Switching in the Olicom CrossFire 8720 Fast
Ethernet Layer 3 Switch Reference Guide for details.
You can start several concurrent console sessions (via a serial port and via Telnet)
from different management stations (the actual number is subject of the available
switch resources, being a function of the switch load).

3.6.1 Connecting a Console

The switch console DB-9 port, which is labelled as "Management" on the front
panel, is an EIA 232 port wired as a DTE. (See appendix A, Cable and PIN
Information, for a description of the cables and adapters). You should observe the
following when connecting your console:
1. To connect your terminal locally, you can use either a null-modem cable or a
modem cable with a null-modem adapter attached.
2. For a modem connection, use a standard modem cable.

3.6.2 How to Start a Console Session

1. Start your PC terminal emulator or terminal, or Telnet to the switch from a
remote terminal device.
2. If you are using a PC terminal emulator or a terminal, set the baud rate to 9600.
3. The screen briefly displays a message indicating the baud rate at which the
serial interface is operating.
4. If a password has been set, a screen with system name and the password
prompt appears. Type the password and press Enter.
5. The switch identification screen displays the copyright notice, system
descriptive data, and the MAC address. If there is any system-down
information to report, the switch displays it in this step (and writes it in the
Event Log).
