3. Switch Access for Management

The switch default configuration (as shipped from the factory) should be adequate
for most common network scenarios if the switch is to be used only as a layer 2
device. To use IP switching, however, you must create relevant subnets in the
switch and configure their parameters, as described in this chapter.

3.1 Selecting Management Interface

Management interfaces enable you to configure the switch and to monitor switch
status and performance. The CrossFire 8720 Switch offers the following
management interface options:
A web-browser interface - switch management through a standard web
browser (such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) via a
LAN. For specific requirements, see Choosing a Browser on page 18.
An ASCII console terminal interface built into the switch. It is a standard
command-line interface (CLI).
A general SNMP interface - any management application running SNMP can
manage the switch, provided the correct MIBs are installed on the management
workstation. The switch supports SNMP over IP and SNMP over MAC. The
needed MIBs are described in the Features and Specifications section of the
Olicom CrossFire 8720 Fast Ethernet Layer 3 Switch Reference Guide.
The RMON interface - used to monitor and analyze the switch operation with a
standard RMON SNMP application. For more information, see RMON
Support in the Olicom CrossFire 8720 Fast Ethernet Layer 3 Switch Reference
Guide.
Each interface consists of a series of management features accessed through a
menu-driven screen system. This manual describes how to use the web-browser
interface and the switch console (chapter 3, Switch Access for Management), and
how to configure the switch using either interface (Configuring the Switch section
in the Olicom CrossFire 8720 Fast Ethernet Layer 3 Switch Reference Guide).
