Jump-starting

before attempting to start. This charges the
empty battery a little.
Make sure that the two vehicles do not touch.
R
Make sure that:
the jump leads are not damaged.
R
bare parts of the terminal clamp do not come
R
into contact with other metal parts while the
jump leads are connected to the battery.
the jump leads cannot come into contact with
R
parts such as the V-belt pulley or the fan.
These parts move when the engine is started
and while it is running.

Jump leads and further information regard-
ing jump-starting can be obtained from any
qualified specialist workshop.
Before reconnecting the jump leads
On vehicles with a battery main switch, check
whether the battery main switch is switched on
Y

page 127).

Apply the parking brake.
X
For vehicles with manual transmission, shift
the gear lever into neutral.
X
If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic
transmission, move the selector lever to posi-
tion P.
X
Switch off all electrical consumers, e.g. audio
equipment, blower.
X
Turn key to position 0 in the ignition lock and
Y
remove it (
page 129).

Open the bonnet (
Connecting the jump lead to the jump-
start connection point
Depending on the vehicle's equipment, the
jump-starting connection point is located in one
of the following positions in the engine com-
partment:
on the left of the air filter (when viewed in the
R
direction of travel)
on the right of the air filter (when viewed in the
R
direction of travel)
on the bulkhead
R

Jump-starting connection point on the left next to
the air filter (example: 6-cylinder engine)
Jump-starting connection point on the right next to
the air filter (example: 4-cylinder diesel engine)
Jump-starting connection point on the bulkhead
(example: 4-cylinder petrol engine)
