9. Install intermediate overrun clutch retainer, and
retaining ring.
DISASSEMBLY A N D REASSEMBLY OF
FORWARD CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
NOTE: Refer to specifications in rear of this section to
determine the required amount of lined and steel clutch
plates to use with specific transmission model and engine
combination. When replacing piston assembly, specific
part number must be used.

Disassembly of Forward Clutch
1. Remove forward clutch drum to pressure plate
retaining ring. Remove forward clutch pressure plate (Fig.
7A3-85).
2. Remove forward clutch housing faced plates, steel
plates and cushion spring (Fig.
7A3-86).

Inspect condition of lined and steel plates. DO not
diagnose a lined drive plate by color.
A.
Dry lined plates with compressed air and inspect the
lined surfaces for:
1. Pitting and flaking.
2. Wear.
3.
Glazing.
4. Cracking.
5.
Charring.
6.
Chips or metal particles imbedded in lining.
If a lined drive plate exhibits any of the above conditions,
replacement is required.
