1.3.1 Configure Primary and Backup Interfaces

After interface backup is configured, the backup interface starts to transmit services if the
primary interface fails.
Applicable Environment
In active/standby mode, the link status between two routers can be detected. When the primary
link is working properly, the backup link does not transmit services. When the primary link is
faulty, the backup link starts to transmit services. When the primary link recovers, services are
switched back to the primary link.
In active/standby mode, the switchover delay is used. A proper delay prevents frequent
switchovers. The default switchover delay is 5s.

After the configuration is complete, run the display standby state command to check the status
of the primary and backup interfaces.

Configuring routing protocols on the primary link and backup link to ensure connectivity
at the network layer
Run:
system-view
The system view is displayed.
Run:
interface interface-type interface-number
The primary interface view is displayed.
Run:
standby interface interface-type interface-number [ priority ]
A backup interface is specified and the priority of the backup interface is set. By default,
the priority of a backup interface is 0.
(Optional) The switchover delay prevents frequent switchovers between the primary and
backup interfaces because of unstable interface status.
Run:
standby timer delay enable-delay disable-delay
The switchover delay is set. By default, the delay is 5s. When the values of enable-delay
and disable-delay are 0, services are switched immediately.
NOTE
To prevent frequent switchovers between the primary interface and the backup interface because of
the unstable interface status, run the standby timer delay command to set the delay. After the primary
interface changes from Up to Down, the system does not switch services to the backup interface
immediately:
l If the primary interface is still Down after the delay, services are switched to the backup interface.
l If the primary interface is restored during the delay, services are not switched.
