Chapter 5: Configure LAN, WAN, and SHDSL
Step
3
Edit the following parameter (as appropriate):
• TCP MSS Clamp
Valid values are True or False. Default is False.
Problem
When using the PPPoE Client for an Internet connection, the user's PC may not be able to browse some
websites.
Explanation
PPPoE uses a Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) setting of 1492 bytes, while all client computers
(Windows IE browsers) usually use the default MTU of 1500 bytes.
A good source for understanding this problem is RFC2923, section 2.1, p.3. Known Implementation
Problems, Black Hole Detection.
Solution
An "MSS Clamp" operates at the TCP layer. It examines the traffic for TCP SYNs, and if necessary,
reduces the negotiated MSS between TCP endpoints to fit within the MTU of the IP interface. The use of
the TCP clamp should allow all web pages to load over PPPoE.
