FAULT
Low or no AC voltage
output at no-load.
GENERATOR TROUBLESHOOTING
CAUSE
1. Engine speed is
too slow.
2. Faulty capacitor.
3. Faulty electrical
connections.
IWARNINGI
CORRECTION
1. Adjust the governor to
obtain the correct
hertz and voltage
output.
2. Perform field test
explained on page 206.
3. Make sure the
connections are clean
and secure.
Stop the generator before checking the connections
Low or no AC voltage
at no-load. (continued)
High no-load AC
voltage output.
Correct no-load voltage,
but low voltage output when
load applied.
4. Faulty generator windings
(A-B-C).
5. Faulty diode(s) in
rotating field (A).
1. Engine speed is
too fast.
2. Capacitor is faulty
(high capacitance).
1. Poor governor reaction.
2. Overload on generator.
3. Diode(s) in rotating
field shorted.

4. Check resistance values
of components.
5. Isolate diode and
check values.
1. Adjust governor to
obtain the correct
hertz and voltage
output.
2. Perform capacitor
field check.
1. Adjust hunting/regulation
on the governor.
2. Check the load that is
applied to the
generator with an
amp-probe.
3. Isolate diode(s) and
check values.
