PDT 7200 Series Product Reference Guide
Application Requirements
A
Very Small Data Storage,
Noncritical
Data storage fits within one or
more RAM Disks that can be
located within the available (not
used by applications) amounts
of 640 KB Conventional Memory
and/or the 1 MB of Extended
Memory.
1.
The first MB of RAM is dedicated for use as Conventional Memory and Shadow Memory. Shadow
Memory is used by the BIOS and is not directly accessible to applications. Conventional Memory
(640 KB) is used to load operating system software, drivers, TSRs, utilities, and applications.
The second MB of RAM is used to allocate the HMA (64KB) if HIMEM.SYS is loaded in
CONFIG.SYS. The remainder of the first MB of RAM is available for use as Extended Memory. The
HMA may be used to load DOS high (which increases the amount of Conventional Memory
available for applications) by specifying DOS=HIGH in CONFIG.SYS. Some or all of the available
Extended Memory may be converted to Expanded Memory by loading EMM386.EXE in
CONFIG.SYS. Available Conventional, Extended, or Expanded Memory can be used to allocate a
RAM Disk by loading RAMDRIVE.SYS in CONFIG.SYS. Generally, Extended Memory is the best
to use for creating a RAM Disk.
