6.2 Implementation

The printing method used by Océ for all printers except the VarioStream 9220 causes a reg-
ister deviation, since black and color are printed in two separate but consecutive processes.
Fusing after the first pass causes the paper to shrink. This shrinkage – or rather the result-
ing register deviation – means that not every application can be suitably enhanced by color.
The data stream is set to "black" for one print engine and "alternate color" for the other. A
distinction is made between the following data types:
"Set Text color" enables selecting "black" or "alternate color" for variable print data
Images
Images are all shadings, LCDS images (*.IMG) and LCDS logos (*.LGO).
The structured field "Set color" enables image color to be set to "black" or "alternate col-
or."
Each print engine filters the entire data stream – images and variable data for black and
alternate color – and positions its data precisely. Independent of this is the positioning of
pixels on paper (see above).
Lighter and darker shading is achieved by defining a lower or higher point density for a color
(black or alternate color).
Lighter and darker huesare presently achieved using different HC shadings.
