DHCP is a protocol for dynamically assigning IP addresses to devices on a
network. With dynamic addressing, a device can have a different IP address every
time it connects to the network. In some systems, the device's IP address can
even change while it is still connected. DHCP also supports a mix of static and
dynamic IP addresses.
Dynamic addressing simplifies network administration because the software
keeps track of IP addresses rather than requiring an administrator to manage the
task. This means that a new computer can be added to a network without the
hassle of manually assigning it a unique IP address. Many ISPs (Internet Service
Provider) use dynamic IP addressing for dial-up users.
Alcatel-Lucent Specific Overview
Note: By default, the DHCP service is disabled and you should 'enable' the DHCP server
explicitly for the service to become available. Currently, you can enable the DHCP
service only through CLI.

The DHCP server in OA-700 provides DHCP clients with an IP address along with
other network and boot information, based on the DHCP request received from
the client.

The major configurable objects in the DHCP component are the Pools and
Options.
• Pool - A pool is a collection of IP addresses maintained by the DHCP server.
A pool can have only a single network or host configured inside it, and is
accordingly called a network or a host pool.
• Options - There are two types of DHCP options - Global Options and Pool
Options. The global options are applicable to all pools. In case the option is
re-specified in a pool, then the pool-specific (per-pool) option overrides the
global option for that pool.
Whenever a DHCP request with a parameter list comes, first the option
will be searched in the pool to which the request maps to, and then if it is
not configured there, it is looked for in the list of global options. If it is not
configured in either places, then it is not supplied.
