FLAIL CUTTING UNIT MAINTENANCE _________________________________

Daily Inspection
Check condition of the blades & hardware every day prior to cutting. Remove any debris or foreign objects from
around flail blades.
Check the blade (A) and fixings are secure. Ensure the
Nut (D), bolt (C) and shackles (B) are securely attached.
Check the blade for any damage and excessive wear of
both tip and mounting hole.
Check the Shackle and Lugs (E) for damage and wear.
Check unit enclosure and ensure guarding is not
damaged securely in place.
Weekly / 50 hour Inspection
Check the blade fixing nuts are tight. If required tighten
nut and bolt to point where tabs flex. Check shackle can
rotate freely, if not loosen bolt until shackle can rotate.
Blades can be sharpened if the edge is damaged. A
maximum of 5 mm (1/4inch) can be ground or filed off
the cutting edge before replacement is necessary
If a high quality finish of cut grass is desired, it is recommend that all blades be replaced as a set per unit. Any
individual blade replacements would require trimming to match length of existing blades. This will help maintain
an even and consistent height of cut.
When refitting or replacing flail blades, ensure the correct orientation of the bolt heads as indicated in diagram. It
is recommended that new fixing hardware is used when replacing worn or damaged blades.
1. Flails in position #1 to have bolt
heads facing towards the centre
line.
2. Flails in position #2 to have bolt
heads facing away from centre line
Inspect and replace immediately any flails, lugs and retaining hardware that show any
indication of cracks, heavy damage or more than expected wear. Failure to replace
damaged parts can cause parts to be thrown out without warning. More than expected
wear or damaged parts will unbalance the rotor and cause lasting damage. When you
operate with an unbalanced rotor it will cause accelerated wear, increased vibration and
