designed t o give many thousands of miles of trouble free service.
Briefly,
it
operates i n t h e following manner: t h e drive i s transmitted through the clutch plates

pleasant torque, which reduces transmission wear due t o t h e absence of "snatch".

The clutch is t h e multi-plate cork type incorporating a transmission shock absorber.
T h e pressure o n t h e plates i s made by four equaliy disposed springs which can be
varied by screwing i n o r o u t the four slotted nuts which secure them.

It
i s n o t recommended that replacement of the cork inserts i n the clutch plates is
made by t h e owner. This operation calls f o r precision and special equipment to
reduce t h e new inserts t o the correct thickness at each side o f the plate and t o
ensure an even overall sudace.
The better method is t o exchange t h e old plates

chaincase is maintained otherwise t h e cork inserts may b u r n and disintegrate under

heavy loading.
Always use t h e recommended grade o f o i l (SAE 20 see lubricant
chart, page 200).
If a heavier grade o f oil
is
used, the clutch plates w ~ l l n o t readily

separate when disengaged which w i l l cause difficult and noisy gear selection when
I
t h e gearchange pedal i s operated.
Even w i t h the thinner grades o f oil, t h e kick-
starter should always be operated a few times w i t h t h e clutch extracted before
I
attempting t o start t h e engine.
This procedure ensures that the plates separate
I
freely when a gear selection i s made.
