Remove t h e spring box a::ernbly
I r o n t h e hub.

T o remove t h e outer race f r o m t h e drive side, a suitable piece of hardwood
should be employed.
The race is removed by driving from t h e outside o f
t h e hub.

The offside outer race which is situated i n the back plate should be removed
by a special rool, o r t h e plate heated sufficiently t o allow the race t o drop
out.
Great care must be taken i f t h e latter operation
is
carried out,
as
excessive heat w i l l destroy hardening of the race.
LUBRICATION OF PARTS
Liberally smear all working parts w i t h graphite grease before assembly.
ASSEMBLY
(1)
Replace the drive side outer race t o t h e hub and ensure that
it
is fully home.
(2)
Fit t h e inner race t o the spring box and grease before assembly.
N o t e that
the ball cage assembiy should be fiited w i t h the cage towards the wheel centre.
(3)
Insert the spring box i n t o t h e hub.
(4)
Assemble t h e race t o the off-side w i t h the balls facing towards the back plate.
(5)
,Fit t h e shims t o the hub and assemble the back plate.
Screw up the nuts
securing the back plate and test the rotation of the spring box for freedom
:during the tightening.
Failure t o do this after new parts have been fitted
may result i n indentation of t h e outer ball race o r fracture of the hub parts.
Any tightness can be obviated by fitting extra shims, altowing the spring b o x
t o rotate and at the same t i m e allowing no lateral movement.

Place t h e wheel i n the vice
or a
suitable jig w i t h t h e drive side uppermost
a n d screw o n t h e brake anchor plate.
T u r n back the anchor plate after fully
tightening until the wheel turns freely. The brake cam lever bush should
then be lined up w i t h the wheel spindle for assembly purposes.

Fit t h e dust cover and then locate the dust plate, ensuring that the spigot
i s
positioned.
Place the spring over t h e spindle and assemble centre sleeve.
Fit spindle t o frame locator on the near side and bevel washer t o the off side,
bevel facing inwards.
W h e r e the rubber gaiter

fitted it
i s
advisable t o
centralise t h e spindle, here a r i g w i l l have t o be made t o overcome the spring
tension.
