Fit t h e valve and inflate t h e tyre.
Bounce t h e wheel zt the point where

fitted and tighten t h e security b o l t nut.
FRAME
S W I N G I N G

The swinging f o r k
i s
pivoted t o t h e main frame by a ground, hollow spindle. T w o
phosphor bronze bushes are pressed i n t o t h e f o r k bridge lug t o provide a bearing
surface f o r t h e f o r k t o swing on.
The spindle
is
a d r i v e fit i n t o t h e frame lug
and a w o r k i n g
fit
i n t h e f o r k bushes. T o retain the spindle in position, a r o d
is
passed through t h e hollow i n t h e spindle and
a t
each end a retainer cap
is
made
captive, by
a
n u t screwed o n t h e r o d end.
Between t h e bridge lug and frame lug
o n the R.H. side,
a
spacing washer i s fitted i n order t o obtain t h e clearance which
should be between .OOOSa. 0.0065" (0.013
-
0.16 mrn.).
A grease nipple
i s
fitted t o
t h e frame t o provide access f o r grease t o t h e bearing by means of a grease gun.
(See Routine Mai~tenance).
Under average conditions the life of the bearing bushes
i s
approximately 20.000 miles
(30,030 kms.). The operation required t o replace the bushes
i s
of
a
major type which
calls for t h e removal
oI
t h e primary chaincase assembly, gearbox covers, rear wheel
and mudguard assembly. If the private owner attempts this w o r k , he should ensure
that he has suffirient tools available t o complete the work. Details of rernoving t h e
above mentioned parts w i l l be found by referring t o the index on page 210.

DAMPER
UNITS
These units are completely self-contained and are known under the type number
S/MDA/4/4, which should always be referred t o in any correspondence.
During the n o r h a l life o f the u n i t t h e maintenance
i s
negligible: such parts
as
t i l e
main spring and rubber bushes can be easily changed by the owner, but shr.:ld
t h e
hydraulic u n i t be suspected, no attempt should be made t o dismantle
it.
The
complete units should be returned
to
a Lucas-Girling Depot o r the manufacturers.
where a service unit can be obtained, o r the fault in the suspected unit rectified.
