5
plate clutch, 1.969" (5.0 cms.). If a spring measures
less than 1.4" and 1.869" (3.56 and 4.75 cms.) respectively, a new one should be
employed, or b e t t e r s t i l l

C o r k Plates. Wash i n paraffin and examine t h e cork inserts for wear and general
condition. The corks should protrude

(0.8 mm.) on each side of t h e plate and
show n o signs o f burning.
The engagement projections o n t h e plate should be
u n w o r n and a good fit i n the clutch housing.
S t e e l Plates. These must be perfectly flat and neither surface scored.
C l u t c h H u b . Inspect the bearing surface f o r pitting and indentation and replace i f

Check diameter w i t h a micrometer 0.2495" (6.337 mm.), 0.25"

new set. Also carefully inspect for signs
o f rust.
C l u t c h S p r o c k e t . First inspect the condition of the sprocket teeth.
If these are
"hooked" o r "chipped" a new sprocket must be fitted t o avoid excessive chain wear.
or, i n extreme cases, chain failure.
If t h e teeth are i n good condition, inspect the
bearing spool f o r pitting o r indentation.
Failure a t this point can be rectified by
pressing o u t t h e old spool and replacing
it
w i t h a new one which must be ground
after fitting.
Lastly, check the housing slots i n which the clutch plates operate.
If w o r n the clutch w i l l be nolsy i n operation an6 i n extreme cases the plates may
n o t free properly when the clutch
is
disengaged.

C l u t c h Housing and H u b .
Apply grease t o t h e centre hub bearing track and
assemble t h e t w e n t y rollers t o the hub.
Fit t h e hub i n t o the clutch sprocket.
Place the assembly on t h e bench w i t h the open end of the housing facing upwards.
S h o c k A b s o r b e r Assembly. Position t h e four clutch pins into the shock absorber
u n i t and press t h e latter onto the hub splines. Before finally pressing i n t o position,
ensure that the heads of the pins
a r e
correctly located against the flange o n the shock
absorber inner plate.
P r i m a r y Chain.
Place the engine sprocket and clutch sprocket o n the bench i n
t h e i r relative positions and assemble the chain
to
them w i t h the spring link fastener
facing upwards and its security checked.
Fit t h e key t o the gearbox mainshaft and
