Flow control
The hardware, software, and procedure for controlling the transfer of
messages or characters between two points in a data network to prevent loss of data when
the receiving device's buffer begins to reach its capacity.
GUI
Graphical User Interface. A generic name for any computer interface that substitute
graphics for characters.
Hot swap
The process of replacing a failed component while the rest of the system
continues working and continues to function normally.
HRDV
Digital Video Recorder.
IDE
Integrated Drive Electronics. IDE is a hard disk drive standard interface for personal
computers (PCs). The distinguishing feature of the IDE interface is that it incorporates the
drive controller functions right on the drive.
Input
A signal fed into a circuit.
IP
Internet Protocol. A standard network protocol that keeps track of the Internetwork
addresses for different nodes, routes outgoing messages, and recognizes incoming
messages. It allows a data packet (datagram) to traverse multiple networks on the way to
its final destination. IP supports higher-level protocols such as TCP and UDP.
ISP
Internet Service Provider. A vendor who provides access for customers to the Internet
and World Wide Web. The user typically reaches his ISP by either dialing-up with their own
computer, modem, and phone line, or over a dedicated line installed by a telephone
company.
LAN
Local Area Network. A short distance data communications network (typically within
a building or campus) used to link together computers and peripheral devices under some
form of standard control.
LCD
Liquid Crystal Display. A constantly operating display.
Multiplexer
A device that transmits two or more signals over a single channel.
NIC
Network Interface Card. A device that connects a device to a LAN, usually in the form
of a PC expansion board.
NTSC
National Television Standards Committee. North American TV format.
Output
Data that flows out of a computer to any device.
