ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A code for representing
alphanumeric information.
ATM
Automated Teller Machine. The street corner banking machine that is usually
hooked up to a central computer through leased local lines and a multiplexed data
network.
Bandwidth
The "width" of a communication channel between the highest and lowest
frequencies carried. Bandwidth is a measure of information-carrying capacity. In analog
communications, bandwidth is typically measured in Hertz—cycles per second In digital
communications, bandwidth is typically measured in bits per second.
Baud rate
The data transmission speed.
BNC
Bayonet Neill-Concelman connector. A bayonet-locking connector for slim coaxial
cables, like those used with Ethernet.
CCTV
Closed-circuit Television.
Compression
Reducing the representation of the information but not the information
itself. Compression saves transmission time or capacity. It also saves storage space on
storage devices such as hard disks, tape drives, and removable disks.
Data bit
The smallest unit of information (data) a computer can process. A bit can have
a value of zero (a space) or one (a mark).
Duplex
A data communications term meaning simultaneous two-way transmission in
both directions.
Ethernet
