Connecting the iS35 to an external sequencer

Even though the iS35 has a built-in sequencer, there
are computer sequencers that have more powerful
editing functions. In general, it is easier to use the
internal sequencer of the iS35 to compose songs that
are based on the automatic accompaniments (i.e. a
backing sequence), and to use a computer sequencer to
make Standard MIDI Files (SMF).
MIDI connections
In order to connect the iS35 to a computer, you need to
have a computer with the MIDI interface.
Connect the iS35, the computer and the sound module
(expander), if any, as in the following diagram.

MIDI IN
MIDI THRU
MIDI IN
The notes played on the iS35 keyboard come from the
MIDI OUT connector and are sent to the MIDI IN con-
nector of the MIDI interface, which transmits them to
the computer.
The notes generated by the computer (i.e. a song
played by its sequencer) are sent to the MIDI interface,
which transmits then to the MIDI IN connector of the
iS35 from the MIDI OUT connector.
The notes received by the MIDI IN connector of the
iS35 are played and immediately transmitted to the
expander, with no modification. Therefore the
expander will receive the same data received by iS35.
We recommend you to mute some of the channels
(tracks) of the iS35 and to mute the expander channels
enabled to play in the iS35 to avoid superimposing the
sounds from the two instruments.

The Local Off
When the iS35 is connected to an external sequencer,
we recommend you to set the iS35 in Local Off mode
to avoid that the notes are simultaneously played by
the keyboard and by the MIDI events sent by the exter-
nal sequencer.
When the iS35 is in Local Off, the iS35 keyboard trans-
mits data to the external sequencer, but not to the
internal sound generation. The sequencer will receive
the notes played on the iS35 keyboard and send them
to the selected track of the song. The track will trans-
mit the data to the internal sound generation of the
iS35.
Note: In order to send data to the iS35 sound genera-
tion, the "MIDI Thru" function must be activated in the
external sequencer (normally active; the name may be
different according to the type of sequencer). For more
information refer to the instructions manual of the
sequencer.
For instance, if the iS35 transmits over channel 1 and
you want to program the drums track assigned to
channel 10, the data transmission will be as follows:
• The iS35 transmits the data to the sequencer over
the MIDI 1 channel.
• The track selected in the "Drums" track (or other
name) to which the MIDI 10 channel is assigned
(see the sequencer manual).
• The sequencer transmits the data received by the
iS35 keyboard to the MIDI 10 channel of the iS35,
which normally corresponds to the drums track
(according to the General MIDI specifications).
Press DISK/GLOBAL to access the Disk/Global
1
mode.
Press PAGE [+] repeatedly to reach "Page 4:
2
Global MIDI parameters".
3
Set the "Local" parameter on OFF.
Now the iS35 keyboard will only send the notes to
the external sequencer (without playing the inter-
nal sounds of the iS35).
Press SONG PLAY to return to the Song Play
4
mode.
Activate the "MIDI Thru" function in the external
5
sequencer.
This function may have different names according
to the type of sequencer. See the instructions man-
ual of the sequencer.
