Loads a single sheet or advances continuous or banner paper to the next top-of-form position if held down.     Unpacking the Printer Your printer box should contain a CD-ROM, which includes the printer driver software that runs your printer, and the following items: paper tray cover printer edge guides (banner paper holders) paper tray power cord banner paper cover ink cartridge In some locations, the power cord comes attached to the printer.

    Choosing a Place for the Printer Follow the guidelines listed below when selecting a location for your printer. Place the printer on a flat, horizontal, stable surface. The printer will not operate properly if it is tilted or at an angle. Place the printer so that it can be connected easily to the computer or the network interface cable.

    Installing the banner paper cover To install the banner paper cover, slide the clips on the bottom of the banner paper cover over the tabs on the bottom of the manual feed guide. Then, push the cover up until the holes fit over the tabs on the back of the printer to close the cover.

    Plugging In the Printer 1. Make sure the printer is turned off. It is off when the surface of the Operate button is even with the button protectors beside the button, as shown. 2. Check the label on the back of the printer to make sure the voltage required by the printer matches that of the electrical outlet you will be plugging it into.

    Installing Ink Cartridges for the First Time Warning: The ink cartridges are self-contained units. Under ordinary use, ink will not leak from a cartridge. If ink does get on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water.
  • Page 35 2. Push the top of the ink compartment door, as shown below. You see four slots for the ink cartridges. 3. Remove the ink cartridges from their packages. 4. Follow the instructions printed on the cartridges, and insert the cartridges, foil plug first, into the proper ink cartridge slot.
  • Page 36 5. After you have installed all of the ink cartridges, the Pause light stops flashing. Close the ink compartment door. The first time you install the ink cartridges, the printer automatically charges the ink delivery system. This operation takes about 8 minutes to complete. Caution: During the ink charging process, the Pause light continues to flash.

If you wish to make a floppy disk version of the printer software on your CD-ROM, you can use the Driver disk creation utility included on the CD.

    Connecting the Printer to Your Macintosh The method you use to connect the printer to your Macintosh depends on whether you want to connect directly to the printer using the printer’s built-in serial interface, or you want to connect the printer to a network using an optional interface card (see the next page).

    Using the Advanced Settings Basically, there are two setting modes in your printer driver: Automatic and Advanced. Automatic settings are described in the previous section, and Advanced settings are described in the following sections. The Advanced settings are divided into two categories: predefined and custom.

    Customizing your print settings Many users will never need to manually make their own print settings. However, if you need more control over the driver, want to make the most detailed settings available, or just want to experiment, click the Advanced button on the Main menu and then click the More Settings button.

    Saving your settings To save your custom settings as a group, click Save Settings on the Main menu. The Custom Settings dialog box appears: Type a unique name for your custom settings in the Name box, and click the Save button. Your settings will appear in the Advanced settings list under the Advanced button on the Main menu.

    Making the Media Type Setting There are actually two Media Type settings; the setting in your printer driver and the setting on your printer’s control panel. You need to make the Media Type setting in your driver every time, even if you select Automatic as the Mode setting. You do not have to make the Media Type setting on your printer’s control panel, but it is recommended.

    Using EPSON Printer Utilities EPSON printer utilities allow you to check the current printer status and do some printer maintenance from your screen. To access the utilities, click the Utility tab in the printer software window, then click the button for the utility you want to use.

    EPSON Status Monitor Note: The Status Monitor is only available for Windows 95. The Status Monitor utility helps you keep track of the printer, and it alerts you if it detects a printer error. You can use this utility to check the paper path, paper size, paper type, and you can check how much ink is remaining.

    Head Cleaning The Head Cleaning utility cleans the color and black print heads. If print quality declines, use this utility to ensure the print head nozzles are delivering ink properly. Before and after print head cleaning, use the Nozzle Check utility to check whether the print heads need to be cleaned (again).

    Checking Printer Status When you send a print job to the printer, the EPSON Despooler and Status Monitor appear in the lower right portion of your screen. The Despooler shows the progress of the current print job and allows you to control the progress of the print job, as described below.

    Understanding the Status Monitor The Status Monitor provides information about printer status as described below. Media Check The Media Check function is selected by default, and it automatically compares the media loaded in the printer with the media selected in the printer driver.     If your document includes color, select Color. If you are printing black text, a draft, or if you want colors to print as varying shades of gray, select Black. Using the Advanced Settings Basically, there are two setting modes in your printer driver: Automatic and Advanced.
