Noise reduction systems
Dolby C noise reduction
The basic principle of operation of the Dolby C NR
system
is the same
as that of the Dolby B NR
system. For improved noise reduction, a two-stage
Dolby NR circuit is used and improves noise red-
uction
performance
at
lower
frequencies
than
when
Dolby B NR is used alone so that medium-
frequency noise reduction is a maximum of 20 GB.
In general, when the NR effect is greater, breathing
noise
occurs.
However,
Dolby
C NR
does
not
introduce
breathing
because
the
frequencies
at
which
the
two-stage
NR
circuit
operates
are
varied using a sliding band system,

improvement of linearity
In addition to the noise reduction effect at low fre-
quencies, the Dolby C system
improves
linearity
at high frequencies. Linearity means the ability to
record
high-level
signals
without
making
them
distorted.
Generally, recording/playback
linearity
deteriorates
as the
frequency
of the
signal
in-
creases; i.e. the higher the signal level is, the more
difficult is it to reproduce higher frequencies. And
this phenomenon
depends greatly on the perfor-
mance of the tape used.
As a result, the cymbals
used in jazz, applause,
fricative consonants
in vocals, and other sounds
dominated by high frequency components cannot
be reproduced with full clarity.

bei hohen
Frequenzen.
Linearitat bedeutet die Fahigkeit,
hochpegelige Signale aufzunehmen, ohne sie zu verzerren.
Im allgemeinen
verschlechtert sich die Aufnahme/Wieder-
gabelinearitaét, wenn die Frequenz des Signals erhdht wird,
d.h, je hdher der Signalpegel desto schwieriger ist es, hohe
Frequenzen
wiederzugeben,
Dieses Phanomen
hangt sehr
von der Leistung des verwendeten Bandes ab.
