Before tow starting or towing away a
#
vehicle, check that it does not exceed
the permissible gross weight.
If a vehicle must be tow-started or towed away,
its permissible gross weight must not exceed the
permissible gross weight of the towing vehicle.
Information on the permissible gross weight
#
of the vehicle can be found on the vehicle
identification plate (
page 403).

Do not open the driver's door or front
#
passenger door. Otherwise the transmission
shifts to position j automatically.
Fasten the tow bar to the towing eyes.

Only connect the tow rope or tow bar to

the towing eyes.
Do not activate the HOLD function.

ted safety-related functions during the
towing process
Safety-related functions are limited or no lon‐
ger available in the following situations:
the ignition is switched off.

the brake system or power steering sys‐

tem is malfunctioning.
the energy supply or the on-board electri‐
R
cal system is malfunctioning.
When your vehicle is then towed away, signif‐
icantly more effort may be required to steer
and brake than is normally required.
Use a tow bar.

Make sure that the steering wheel can

move freely before towing the vehicle
away.

power
If you pull away sharply, the tractive power
may be too high and the vehicles could be
damaged.
Pull away slowly and smoothly.

Notes on recovering a vehicle that is stuck

If the tractive power is too high, the vehicles
could be damaged.
Pull out the vehicle that is stuck as

straight and evenly as possible during
recovery.
Observe the following during recovery to avoid
damage to your vehicle:
if the driven wheels get trapped on loose or

muddy ground, recover the vehicle with the
utmost care,
