Depending on the situation, it may take a
short time until j is engaged. Therefore,
always pay attention to the transmission
position display.
Park position j is engaged automatically if one
of the following conditions is met:
you switch off the ignition when the vehicle
R
is stationary and the transmission is in posi‐
tion h or k.
you open the driver's door when the vehicle
R
is stationary or when driving at a very low
speed and the transmission is in position h
or k.

To manoeuvre with an open driver's door,
open the driver's door while stationary and
engage transmission position h or k
again.
Engaging drive position D
Depress the brake pedal and push the
#
DIRECT SELECT lever down past the first
point of resistance.
When the automatic transmission is in transmis‐
sion position h, it shifts the gears automati‐
cally. This depends, among other things, on the
following factors:
the selected drive program
R
the position of the accelerator pedal
R
the driving speed
R

You can shift from h to k and from k to
h without having to depress the brake
pedal.
Problems with the transmission
The transmission has a faulty gear shift
Possible cause:
the transmission is losing oil.
R
Have the transmission checked at a qualified
#
specialist workshop immediately.
The acceleration characteristics get worse,
and the transmission no longer shifts.
Possible cause:
the transmission is in emergency operation
R
mode: it is only possible to shift to one gear
and reverse gear.
Stop the vehicle in accordance with the traf‐
#
fic conditions.
Shift the transmission to position j.
#
Switch off the engine.
#
Wait at least ten seconds.
#
Start the engine again.
#
Shift the transmission to position h or k.
#
If h is selected, the transmission only shifts
to one gear; if k is selected, the transmis‐
sion shifts to reverse gear.
Have the transmission checked at a qualified
#
specialist workshop immediately.
