AL_PA: Abbreviation of Arbitrated Loop
Physical Address
Backup software:
Software run on the host computer.
This software is used to track data
backup and to execute the library
functions.
Board:
Printed circuit assembly (PCA). The
board is also called a card or adapter.
Bus:
Common data path for transmitting data
Cartridge Access Station (CAS):
Slot used to insert a tape cartridge into a
cell or eject it from a cell. Actually, a
magazine is installed in CAS and a tape
cartridge is inserted from the slot of the
magazine or ejected to the slot.
Calibration:
Routine executed immediately after a
tape cartridge is loaded. It is used to
determine whether any data is written to
the tape, the tape and drive are
compatible, and any read/write function
is available.
Cleaning tape:
Tape cassette used only for cleaning the
drive
Drive/Tape drive:
Device used by the library to write data
into the tape
Drive cleaning:
One of the library functions that cleans
the tape drive using the cleaning tape
Drive module:
Whole assembly that makes up a drive
including the metal case and connectors

Differential SCSI:
A type of SCSI cable that can transmit
data within a 25-meter distance
Event:
Important operations for the library that
are recorded in the event log. Drive
errors, online/offline switching, drive
cleaning, and other information are
reported to the event log.
Optical LAN:
Switched interconnection system to
support high-speed data transfer in a
fiber channel network
Fiber channel:
Switched protocol used to enable
simultaneous communication among
workstations, supercomputers,
mainframes, data storage devices, and
other peripheral devices. The fiber
channel can transmit data at a speed
exceeding 1 GBps in both directions
simultaneously.
Fiber Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC_AL):
Topology to connect multiple fiber
channel ports in one loop at a low price
without using switches
Display on the front panel:
LCD (liquid crystal display) with five
soft keys. This LCD is mounted in the
front (in the top stage for a multi-level
library) of the library to control all
library functions.
GBIC:
Abbreviation of Gigabit Interface
Converter
Hardware error:
Unrecoverable electronic error in the
library function
