Notes to field tests
The field tests performed for Class II A and B3 safety
cabinets for microbiological and biotechnological ex-
periments have the following purpose:
Testing of the safety functions of the unit at the lo-
cation, particularly protection of the operating per-
sonnel and of the location environment against
contamination, and the protection of the experi-
ment against harmful environmental influences.
Inflow velocity test,
Downflow velocity test,
Airflow pattern test,
Filter leak test,
Cabinet leak test.
Tests that refer to the ergonomic conditions of the
work situation and to the workplace safety.
Electrical leakage test, ground resistance test,
polarity test,
Lighting intensity test,
Vibration test,
Noise level test.
The values measured at the place of location of the
cabinet are compared with the nominal values. If re-
quired, the safety cabinet must be set or modified ac-
cordingly to ensure that the nominal values are within
the tolerable limits (see section "Troubleshooting").
The tests must be performed in the following se-
quence:
1. Electrical tests,
2. Cabinet leak test.
3. Inflow velocity test,
4. Downflow velocity test,
5. Airflow pattern test,
6. Filter leak test,
7. Lighting intensity test,
8. Vibration test,
9. Noise level test.
NOTE – Test measurements
The tests at the place of location are per-
formed according to NSF 49, Annex F.
They must be performed:
After the final installation of the safety cabinet
prior to the initial start-up.
Once a year during the operation as part of the
service work.
After any replacement of the downflow filter.
After any replacement of the exhaust filter.
After any repairs to the unit.
After any relocation of the unit to a new location.
When working with critical materials (toxic or slightly
radioactive substances), the on-site tests should be
performed at shorter intervals (every three to six
months).
NOTE – Test report
All tests require a test report in duplicate. The
operator must receive one copy of the report.
A sample test report is attached at the end of this sec-
tion.
NOTE - Safety precautions:
Check disinfection and decontamination
of the unit!
