Notes for disinfection
The disinfection of the safety cabinet is the responsi-
bility of the operator.
If disinfection is required prior to repairs, the following
standardized gas disinfection procedure must be fol-
lowed for cabinets that were not used for microbio-
logical experiments.
NOTE! – Intended use of the unit!
Prior to decontamination, inquire about the
substances and materials that had been treated in the
safety cabinet.
CAUTION! – Health hazard!
Disinfectants may contain harmful sub-
stances that may cause injuries when they
come in contact with skin or eyes or harm
the respiratory system when inhaled.
Observe the safety instructions and hy-
giene regulations!
Wear safety gloves.
Wear safety goggles.
Wear mouth and nose masks to protect the
mucous membranes.
Observe the instructions of the disinfectant
manufacturer and of the hygiene personnel.
Ambient conditions:
The temperature in the work room should be approxi-
mately 21°C (70°F); the relative humidity should be
between 60 and 85%.
Auxiliary devices:
Hot plate or heating device with thermostat.
Heatable beaker.
Application of the gas disinfection:
Paraformaldehyde is used for gas disinfection. The
quantity of the applied paraformaldehyde depends on
the volume of the cabinet that is to be disinfected.
For HS type HERAsafe cabinets, the following quanti-
ties of 20 % paraformaldehyde solution are required:
HS 12 with a chamber volume of approx. 1.6 m³:
50 ml paraformaldehyde.
HS 18 with a chamber volume of approx. 2.5 m³:
75 ml paraformaldehyde.
The paraformaldehyde will evaporate immediately af-
ter its boiling point is reached; the reaction time is six
hours.
NOTE! – Wipe/Spray disinfection!
If wipe or spray disinfection is also to be applied addi-
tionally for parts or components, the use of disinfect-
ing agents with an alcohol content of more than 10 %
is prohibited.
1. Wipe or spray the components with a disinfecting
agent according to the properties of the compo-
nents
2. Allow the disinfecting agent to react according to
the manufacturer's instructions.
