FRONT AIRBAG
INFLATED
ON IMPACT

Front Airbag Deployment

A sensor incorporated into the SRS control
module, detects the rate of deceleration
in a collision and when appropriate, the
first stage of airbag inflation is initiated.
This causes the front airbags to inflate at
a rate calculated to provide appropriate
protection, whilst minimising the potential
for airbag induced injury, especially where
an occupant is not positioned optimally at
the triggering moment. If a higher rate of
deceleration is detected, indicating a more
severe impact, the second stage inflation
rate is triggered to more rapidly inflate the
airbags. In either case, both airbags inflate
in a fraction of a second to form a cushion
for the driver's and front passenger's up-
per bodies.
Dependant upon the angle of collision (front
or near frontal) the front airbags may inflate
without deploying the side airbags.

After deployment the front airbags deflate
rapidly to minimise any obstruction to the
occupants and reduce any danger of suf-
focation.
After airbag inflation, you may see what
looks like smoke, but is likely to be powder
from the airbag surface used to aid smooth
deployment. Although the powder is not
harmful, people with respiratory problems
may experience some temporary discom-
fort. If this occurs, get out of the car if pos-
sible as soon as it is safe to do so.
WARNING
Airbag system components remain hot
after inflation. Do not touch them after
inflation.

Seat Belt Pre-Tensioners

Activated at the same time as the front air-
bags applying a tightening force to the belt
reel to remove any slack from the belt.

SIDE AIRBAG
INFLATED
ON IMPACT

Side Airbag Deployment

If the vehicle is involved in a moderate to
severe side collision, the airbag on the
impact side of the vehicle will inflate within
a fraction of a second, breaking the airbag
cover fitted on the outboard side of the af-
fected front seat.
The inflating airbag exits the side of the
seat, forming a vertical cushion protecting
the front occupants chest area from being
struck by interior vehicle components as
well as objects/structures from outside of
the vehicle.
The seat belt pre-tensioners will not ac-
tivate in the event that only a side airbag
is deployed.
