To put on and adjust the harness, follow the steps in the figures 1. The back D-ring should be centered between the shoulder blades. Ensure the harness webbing is not twisted,
and adjusted to a snug fit. (Check all connectors to ensure they are closed and locked before use.)
Regularly check fastening and/or adjustment elements during use.
MSA full body harnesses can be delivered with an integral D-ring extender. The length of D-ring extender that is marked on the product shall be taken into free fall calculation
(see figure 6A & 6B).
It is the responsibility of the user of MSA Harness to assure that they are made familiar with these User Instructions and trained by a competent person. (Ensure that you have
been adequately trained in the use of this harness equipment and make sure that you fully understand how it works.)
Chemical hazards, heat and corrosion may damage the harness. More frequent inspections are required in these environments. Do not use the harness in environments with
temperatures lower than -40°C and greater than 50°C. Use caution when working around electrical hazards, moving machinery and abrasive surfaces. For harnesses that have
Secure-Fit buckles (see figure12), special care must be taken around dusty environments, as small particles may prevent proper function of the buckle.
The user must have a rescue plan and the means at hand to implement it; and that plan must take into account the equipment and special training necessary to affect prompt
rescue under all foreseeable conditions.
Assigning the harness to a user to allow tracking of harness usage is recommended. These instructions and record card should be issued with and kept with each harness.
All components connected to this harness MUST be compatible. It is recommended to use ONLY approved MSA components with this harness i.e. lanyard integral with energy
absorber (EN 354, EN 355), work positioning lanyard (EN 358). Instructions and warnings of components used with this harness MUST be followed.
The Spreader bar (see figure 28) is intended for use for rescue of a person after fall. See separate instructions.
Not every full body harness sold with these user instructions is equipped with all features shown. The user must identify which features are applicable to the product they
purchased and follow the appropriate instructions information.
The average lifespan of the product is 5 years. However, the following factors can reduce the performance of the product and its lifespan: incorrect storage, incorrect use, fall
arrest, mechanical warping, contact with chemicals (acids and alkalis), exposure to high temperatures.
Good medical fitness of the user is necessary in order to carry out work at a height. Certain medical conditions can threaten the users' safety during normal use of harness and
in emergencies (taking medications, cardiovascular problem, etc.). In any case of doubt, consult your physician before using. Pregnant women and minors MUST NEVER use
the harness.
A full body harness shall not be used outside its limitations, or for any purpose other than that for which it is intended. The integral lanyard must be only used with an element
which absorbs the energy i.e. an energy absorber. It is essential for safety that the equipment is withdrawn from use immediately if any doubt arises about its condition for safe
use. A full body harness is the only acceptable body holding device that can be used in a fall arrest system. A fall arrest system (EN 353-1, EN 353-2, EN 355, EN 360), MUST
ONLY be connected to the harness back D-ring or front loop only with the fall arrest attachment tag "A" or "A/2" (see figure 27) as described in the instructions of the subsystem.
For fall arrest applications always use both front loops together. These points can also be used for connecting a rescue system. Rescue D-rings on shoulder straps are not for
fall arrest. They may only be used for rescue with MSA Workman spreader bar.
Never use the hip D-ring for fall arrest or climbing protection. The hip D-ring of a harness MUST ONLY be used for connecting a work positioning system (EN 358) and NEVER a fall arrest
system or climbing protection. Always use both hip D-rings together, for work positioning applications. And a separate fall arrest system must be used. Adjust work position lanyard so that
the anchorage point is maintained at or above waist level (see figure 4). Ensure the lanyard is kept taut and movement is restricted to a maximum distance of 0.6 meters.
Whenever possible, to attach a fall arrest system, choose an anchorage point directly ABOVE the user's position to minimize swing falls. (see figure 30). Avoid any point on
which strength is doubtful. It is preferable to use structural anchors provided for the purpose (in accordance with EN 795) or anchorage points with a minimum strength of 10kN.
The harness MUST be fully inspected before each use to verify that it is in serviceable condition. Additionally, the harness MUST be inspected at least once every six months by
a competent person authorized by current legislation in the country of use. Examine the harness straps for severe wear, cuts, burns, frayed edges, abrasion, or other damage.
Examine stitching for any pulled, loose, or torn stitches. Examine the legibility of the product markings.
Do not use harness if inspection reveals an unsafe condition.
Consideration MUST be given to the necessary minimum clearance (clearance = D, see figure 5) below the user to prevent a collision with the structure or the ground. Specific
recommendations will be given with the sub-system. DO NOT modify or attempt repairs on the harness. Broken or pulled stitches in the load indicator (see figure 14) show that
the harness has experienced load force or degradation due to environmental factors.
Do not use a harness with broken stitches in the load indicator.
The load indicator will only active when attached to the back D-ring. Due to the nature of some fall events, it is possible for the load indicator to not deploy. However, in the event
of any fall, the harness must be removed from service.
It is essential for the safety of the user that if the product is re-sold outside the original country of destination the reseller shall provide instructions and additional relevant
information for use, for maintenance, for periodic examination and for repair in the language of the country in which the product is to be used.
Failure to follow these warnings can cause serious personal injuries or death.
The webbings of full body harness are made from Polyester, Nylon or other multifilament synthetic fibers. All load bearing hardware is Zinc plated alloy steel or aluminum alloy. Clean
the harness with a solution of water and mild laundry detergent. Dry hardware with a clean cloth and hang harness to air dry. Do not speed dry with heat. Excessive accumulation of
dirt, paint, or other foreign matter may prevent proper function of the harness, and in severe cases, weaken the webbing. To clean buckles use a cotton swab to remove any foreign
material which enters the buckle. In dusty environments, dipping the buckle into a container of water may be used to rinse out fine particles that may prevent proper function of buckles.
Dry buckle on the outside with a clean cloth and allow inside of buckle to air dry. Questions concerning harness conditions and cleaning should be directed to MSA.
Equipment which is damaged or in need of maintenance must be tagged as "UNUSABLE" and removed from service. Corrective maintenance (other than cleaning) and repair,
such as replacement of elements, must be performed by the MSA factory. Do not attempt field repairs. For harnesses that have Secure-Fit buckles, a light penetrating oil can be
applied to the locking tabs to ensure smooth operation. Wipe any excess oil off with a clean rag.
Store the harness in a cool, dry and clean place out of direct sunlight. Avoid areas where heat, moisture, light, oil, and chemicals or their vapors or other degrading elements may
be present. Equipment which is damaged or in need of maintenance should not be stored in the same area as usable equipment. Heavily soiled, wet, or otherwise contaminated
equipment should be properly maintained (e.g. dried and cleaned) prior to storage. Prior to using equipment which has been stored for long periods of time, a Formal Inspection
should be performed by a competent person. For harness with buckles, store the harness with the Secure-Fit buckles connected. Transport the harness in a package to protect
it from cuts, moisture, chemicals and their vapours, extreme temperatures, and ultraviolet rays.
