Pinging to Determine the Extron IP Address

The ping utility is available at the DOS prompt. Ping tests the Ethernet interface between
the computer and the DMS matrix switcher. Ping can also be used to determine the actual
numeric IP address from an alias and to determine the web address.
Ping the switcher as follows:
1.
On the Windows task bar, click on Start > Run.
2.
At the Open prompt, type command.
3.
Click OK.
4.
At the DOS prompt, type ping <IP address> and then press <Enter> . The
computer returns a display similar to the one shown in figure 75.
The line Pinging ... reports the actual numeric IP address, regardless of whether you
entered the actual numeric IP address or an alias name.
C:\>ping 192.168.254.254
Pinging 192.168.254.254 with 32 bytes of data:

Pinging to Determine the Web IP Address

The ping utility has a modifier, -a, that directs the command to return the web address
rather than the numeric IP address.
At the DOS prompt, type ping -a <IP address> and then press <Enter>. The return
display is similar to the ping response shown in figure 76, except that when you specify the
-a modifier, the line Pinging mail... reports the web IP address rather than the numeric
IP address, regardless of whether you entered the actual numeric IP address or an alias
name.

Configuring the DMS Matrix Switcher for Network use via the ARP Command

The ARP (address resolution protocol) command tells your computer to associate the MAC
(media access control) address of the DMS matrix switcher with the assigned IP address.
You must then use the ping utility to access the controller, at which point the IP address of
the controller is reconfigured.
Use ARP to configure the IP address as follows:
1.
Obtain a valid IP address for the DMS matrix switcher from your network administrator.
2.
Obtain the MAC address (UID #) of the DMS matrix switcher from the label on its rear
panel. The MAC address should have this format: 00-05-A6-xx-xx-xx.
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
