3.11 Move the transmission selector
lever (1) fully forwards so that it is in
the P position (2)
rear and disengage it from the facia at the
front (see illustration). Lift the panel up and
off the selector lever.
6 Release the retaining clips (three on each
panel) and remove the footwell trim panels
on the left- and right-hand sides of the facia,
below the selector lever (see illustration).
7 Remove the selector lever frame by pulling
it rearwards, away from the facia to release.
8 Unclip the selector lever cover at the rear
on each side. Lift the cover up and off the

selector lever and position it to one side
without disconnecting the wiring.
9 Release the selector cable by turning the
cable lock, located to the left of the lever, 90°
anti-clockwise (see illustration).
10 To gain access to the transmission end
of the selector cable, remove the battery and
battery tray as described in Chapter 5A.
11 Ensure that the selector lever is still in the
P position and move the lever on the trans-
mission selector mechanism fully forwards
so that the transmission is also positioned in
the Park position (see illustration). With both
the selector lever and transmission correctly
positioned, turn the selector cable lock 90°
clockwise.
12 Refit the selector lever cover and selector
lever frame.
13 Refit the lower trim panels on each side of
the facia.
14 Refit the selector lever trim panel and
secure with the two retaining screws.
15 Ensure that the actuating rod for the
selector lever lock protrudes from the top
of the lever, then with the locking button
depressed, refit the knob to the selector lever.
Rotate the engaging sleeve on the selector
lever anti-clockwise to secure the knob.
16 Refit the ashtray housing to the base of
the facia, then refit the ashtray.
17 Refit the battery tray and battery as
described in Chapter 5A.
4 Selector cable,..
removal and refitting
Removal
1 Remove the selector lever assembly as
described in Section 5.
2 To gain access to the transmission end of
the selector cable, remove the battery and
battery tray as described in Chapter 5A.
3 Working in the engine compartment, use
a forked tool or flat-bladed screwdriver and
carefully lever the selector inner cable end
fitting off the balljoint on the selector lever
position switch. Pull back the retaining sleeve
and detach the outer cable from the mounting
bracket on the transmission (see illustration).
4 Release the rubber grommet at the cable

entry point on the engine compartment
bulkhead, then pull the cable (complete with
grommet) out of the bulkhead and into the
engine compartment.
Refitting
5 Push the selector cable through the bulk-
head passage from the engine compartment
and locate the rubber grommet back into
position in the bulkhead.
6 Refit the outer cable to the mounting
bracket on the transmission.
7 Engage the inner cable end fitting with
the balljoint on the selector lever position
switch, squeezing them together with pliers if
necessary.
8 Refit the selector lever assembly as
described in Section 5.

Removal
1 Disconnect the battery negative terminal
(refer to Disconnecting the battery in the
Reference Chapter).
2 Carry out the operations described in
Section 3, paragraphs 2 to 9.
3 Disconnect the selector lever assembly
wiring harness connector.
4 Undo the four bolts securing the selector
lever assembly to the mounting bracket.
5 Using a small screwdriver inserted through
the left-hand side of the lever assembly,

outer selector cable by pushing the guide
