9*6 Braking system
4.2p The brake pads are 'handed' for each
side. Make sure the arrow on the backing
plate points in the direction of forward
rotation of the brake disc
4.2s Slide the caliper into position in the
mounting bracket
4.2v ... then refit the dust caps
4.2x ..• then hold the legs in place and
locate the spring behind the lugs on the
mounting bracket
4.2q fit the inner pad to the caliper,
ensuring that its clip is correctly located in
the caliper piston
4.2t Fit the guide bolts ...
4.2w locate the retaining spring legs into
the holes in the caliper •••
4.2y Clip the wiring guide back onto the
brake hose. Where fitted, attach the pad
wear warning indicator wire to the inner
pad
4.2r Fit the outer pad to the caliper
mounting bracket, ensuring that its friction
material is facing the brake disc
4.2u ••. tighten the guide bolts to the
specified torque •.•
Warning: Renew BOTH sets of
rear brake pads at the same time -
NEVER renew the pads
on
only
one
wheel, as uneven braking may result. Note
that the dust created by wear of the pads
may contain asbestos, which is
a
health
hazard. Never blow
it
out with compressed
air; and
do
not inhale any
of it.
An approved
filtering mask should be worn when working
on the brakes. DO NOT use petroleum-
based solvents to clean brake parts - use
brake cleaner or methylated spirit only.
1 Chock the front wheels then jack up the
rear of the car and securely support it on axle
stands (see Jacking and vehicle support).
Remove the rear roadwheels.
2 Slacken the handbrake cable adjuster at the
handbrake lever as described in Section 14,
paragraphs 11 and 12.
3 Follow the
accompanying
photos
(illustrations 5.3a to 5.3u) for the pad renewal
procedure, bearing in mind the additional
points listed below. Be sure to stay in order
and read the caption under each illustration.
Note that if the old pads are to be refitted,
ensure that they are identified so that they can
be returned to their original positions.
4 If the original brake pads are still serviceable,
