4 Using a large screwdriver or a pry bar, check
for wear in the mounting by carefully levering
against it to check for free play; where this
is not possible, enlist the aid of an assistant
to move the engine/transmission unit back-
and-forth, or from side-to-side, while you
watch the mounting. While some free play is
to be expected even from new components,
excessive wear should be obvious. If
excessive free play is found, check first that
the fasteners are correctly secured, then
renew any worn components as described
below.
Renewal
Note: Before slackening any of the engine
mounting bolts/nuts, the relative positions of
the mountings to their various brackets should
be marked to ensure correct alignment upon
refitting.
Front mounting/torque link
5 Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front
of the vehicle and support it on axle stands
(see Jacking and vehicle support).
6 Slacken and remove the nut securing the
mounting to the subframe bracket. Withdraw
the through-bolt (see illustration).
7 Undo the bolts securing the mounting
bracket to the transmission, then manoeuvre
the mounting and bracket out of position.
8 Check all components for signs of wear or
damage, and renew as necessary.
9 Locate the mounting in the subframe, refit
the through-bolt and nut, then tighten the nut
finger-tight at this stage.
10 Refit the mounting bracket to the trans-
mission and tighten its bolts to the specified
torque.
11 Tighten the through-bolt nut to the
specified torque.
12 On completion, lower the vehicle to the
ground.
Rear mounting/torque link
13 Apply the handbrake, then jack up the
front of the vehicle and support it on axle
stands (see Jacking and vehicle support).
14 Working under the vehicle, remove the
centre nut and bolt securing the mounting to
the transmission bracket.
15 Remove the two bolts securing the
mounting to the subframe, and withdraw the
mounting/torque link (see illustration).
16 If necessary, unbolt the bracket from the
transmission. Note: The bracket bolts and link
bolts are of different lengths.
17 Refit the bracket to the transmission and
tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
18 Locate the new mounting/link in
position ensuring that the lug on the top of
the mounting engages with the slot in the
transmission bracket. Insert the bolts, screw
on the nut and tighten to the specified torque.
19 On completion, lower the vehicle to the
ground.

Right-hand mounting
20 Apply the handbrake, then jack up the
front of the vehicle and support it on axle
stands (see Jacking and vehicle support).
21 Remove the air cleaner as described in
Chapter 48.
22 Place a trolley jack beneath the right-hand
end of the engine with a block of wood on the
jack head. Raise the jack until it is supporting
the weight of the engine.
23 Mark the position of the three bolts
securing the mounting bracket to the engine
bracket and undo the bolts. Undo the three
bolts securing the mounting to the body
and remove the mounting assembly (see
illustration).
24 Place the mounting assembly in position
and refit the three bolts securing the mounting
to the body. Tighten the bolts to the specified
torque. Align the mounting in its original
position, then tighten the three mounting
bracket bolts to the specified torque.
25 Remove the support jack, then refit the air
cleaner as described in Chapter 48.
26 On completion, lower the vehicle to the
ground.

28 Remove the battery and battery tray as
described in Chapter 5.
29 Attach a suitable hoist and lifting tackle
to the engine lifting brackets on the cylinder
head, and support the weight of the engine.
30 Working under the wheel arch undo the
nut securing the lower rear corner of the
mounting to the body, then withdraw the bolt
from within the engine compartment.
31 Undo the three bolts securing the
mounting bracket to the transmission bracket
(see illustration).
32 Undo the three remaining bolts securing
the mounting to the body {see illustration).
33 Where applicable, unclip the clutch
hydraulic line from the mounting bracket.
Remove the mounting assembly from the car.
34 If necessary, undo the through-bolt
and separate the rubber mounting from the
mounting bracket.
35 If removed, refit the rubber mounting to the
mounting bracket and tighten the through-bolt
to the specified torque.
36 Locate the mounting brackets in position
and, where applicable, clip the clutch hydraulic
line onto the bracket.
37 Insert the bolts/nut, then tighten them to
the specified torque.
38 Disconnect the hoist and lifting tackle.
39 Refit the wheel arch liner and roadwheel,
then lower the vehicle to the ground.
