11 Suitably support the front pipe on blocks
or secure it to the underbody with wire, to
avoid damage to the flexible section.
12 Undo the three nuts securing the front
pipe flange to the intermediate pipe flange
(see illustration 20.5).
13 Spray some penetrating oil over the
exhaust rubber mounting blocks so that
the mounting blocks will slide easily on the
exhaust and underbody hangers.
14 Slide the front rubber mounting blocks as
far forward as possible. Move the intermediate
pipe to the rear to separate the flange joint,
then disengage the front hangers from the
mounting blocks.
15 Move the intermediate pipe forward and
disengage the rear hangers from the rubber
mounting blocks. Lower the intermediate pipe
to the ground and slide it out from under the
car.
Tailpipe
16 Loosen the clamp securing the tail pipe to
the intermediate pipe (see illustration).
17 Unhook the tailpipe from its rubber
mountings and slide the tailpipe from the
intermediate pipe. If the tailpipe is rusted onto
the intermediate pipe, apply liberal amounts
of penetrating oil and tap around the joint with
a hammer to free it. Twist the tailpipe in both
directions until free.

Catalytic converter/particulate filter
18 Remove the front pipe as described
previously in this Section.
19 Remove the plastic cover from the top of
the engine
20 Undo the three nuts and three bolts
securing the heat shield to the exhaust
manifold and catalytic converter (see
illustration 19.18). Manipulate the heat shield
off the studs and remove it from the engine.
21 Unscrew the two bolts and one nut an.d
remove the catalytic converter lower support
bracket.
22 Disconnect the pre-catalytic converter
temperature sensor wiring connector, then
unscrew the clamp bolt nut and remove the
catalytic converter.
Heat shield(s)
23 The heat shields are secured to the under-
side of the body by various nuts and bolts.
Each shield can be removed once the relevant
exhaust section has been removed. If a shield is
being removed to gain access to a component
located behind it, it may prove sufficient in
some cases to remove the retaining nuts and/
or bolts, and simply lower the shield, without
disturbing the exhaust system.
Refitting
24 Each section is refitted by reversing

the removal sequence, noting the following
points:
a) Ensure that all traces of corrosion have
been removed from the system joints.
b) When refitting the front pipe to the
catalytic converter flange joint, use a
new gasket and new retaining nuts, and
tighten the nuts to the specified torque.
c) Inspect the rubber mountings for signs
of damage or deterioration, and renew as
necessary.
d) Prior to tightening the exhaust system
fasteners, ensure that all rubber
mountings are correctly located, and that
there is adequate clearance between the
exhaust system and vehicle underbody.
