bolt and the two upper mounting bolts (see
illustration). Collect the wiring harness
support bracket then manoeuvre the starter
motor upwards and out of position.
Refitting
24 Refitting is a reversal of removal, tightening
the retaining bolts to the specified torque.
Ensure all wiring is correctly routed and its
retaining nuts are securely tightened.
If the starter motor is thought to be suspect,
it should be removed from the vehicle and
taken to an auto-electrician for testing. Most
auto-electricians will be able to supply and fit
brushes at a reasonable cost. However, check
on the cost of repairs before proceeding as it
may prove more economical to obtain a new
or exchange motor.
The switch is integral with the steering
column lock, and removal and refitting is
described in Chapter 1
o.
1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol engines
Removal
1 The oil pressure warning light switch is
screwed into the front of the cylinder block.
2 Firmly apply the handbrake, then jack up
the front of the car and support it securely on
axle stands (see
Jacking and vehicle support).
3 On models equipped with air conditioning,
refer to Chapter 3 and unbolt the air
conditioning compressor from the cylinder
block without disconnecting the refrigerant
lines. Support the compressor to one side for
access to the oil pressure warning light switch.
4 Disconnect the wiring connector then
unscrew the switch and recover the sealing
washer. Be prepared for oil spillage, and if the
switch is to be left removed from the engine for
any length of time, plug the switch aperture.
Refitting
5 Examine the sealing washer (where fitted)
for signs of damage or deterioration and if
necessary renew.
6 Refit the switch and washer (where fitted),
tightening it to the specified torque, and
reconnect the wiring connector.
7 Where applicable, refit the air conditioning
compressor as described in Chapter 3.

Removal
9 The switch is screwed into the front of the
cylinder block, behind the starter motor. To
gain access to the switch, it will be necessary
to remove the starter motor as described in
Section 11.
10 Disconnect the wiring connector then
unscrew the switch and recover the sealing
washer. Be prepared for oil spillage, and if the
switch is to be left removed from the engine for
any length of time, plug the switch aperture.
