To monitor playback in the viewfinder while recording

Press the RET button on the lens.
While the button is pressed, you can monitor playback on the VTR through
the viewfinder even as you continue to record.
Checking the brightness signal in the viewfinder during
playback
Press the RET button on the lens for the playback picture to be appeaared
in the viewfinder.
Checking the chrominance signal in the viewfinder during
playback (when CA-553 and BVV-5/5PS are attached)
Press the RET button on the lens while holding down the CTDM PB
button on the VTR.
While the button is pressed, the CTDM playback picture (monochrome)
appears in the viewfinder. Check that the three sections that appear in the
viewfinder are identical in brightness, as shown in the illustration below.
If the white balance is correct, the brightness levels
of these sections will be the same.
