Adjusting the steering head bearing play

Greasing the steering head bearing
Main work
–
Move the handlebar to the straight-ahead position. Move the fork legs to and fro
in the direction of travel.
No play should be noticeable in the steering head bearing.

If there is noticeable play present:
–
Adjust the steering head bearing play.
–
Move the handlebar to and fro over the entire steering range.
The handlebar must be able to move easily over the entire steering range.

There should be no perceptible detent positions.

If detent positions are noticeable:
–
Adjust the steering head bearing play.
–
Check the steering head bearing and replace if required.
Finishing work
–
Remove the motorcycle from the lift stand. (
Preparatory work
–
Raise the motorcycle with a lift stand. (
–
Remove the handlebar cushion.
Main work
–
Loosen screws
–
Remove screw
–
Loosen and retighten screw
Guideline
Screw, top steering head
–
Using a plastic hammer, tap lightly on the upper triple clamp to avoid stresses.
–
Tighten screws

Mount and tighten screw

Finishing work
–
Check the play of the steering head bearing. (
–
Remove the motorcycle from the lift stand. (
–
Mount the handlebar cushion.
–
Remove the lower triple clamp.
–
Install the lower triple clamp.
